11-20 July 2008. If you have never been you don't know what you are missing! This is one of the oldest and most important jazz festivals in Europe. Top names have frequented this festival over the years and this year is no exception. Some examples are Bill Frisell Trio, Sonny Rollins, Cassandra Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden Quartet. This festival is not purely about Jazz these days. It has become an event which today's musicians want to be seen at. Other notables this year include Alicia Keys, Mario Biondi and R.E.M. The atmosphere in such a beautiful city is unbelievable.

Umbria film festival, Montone, Italy

The unusual side of property management in Italy!

We have been involved in a myriad of tasks since starting this business, not only the ordinary cleaning, gardening, swimming pool maintenance, meet and greet guests, cook entire menus but here are two examples of the more out of the ordinary days:
moving a Grand Piano in a snowstorm up a 5kilometre white road.
removing a bee swarm from inside some shutters in a house, (the upside was great honey!).
The latest was by far the most unusual request.
One of our clients was making a film in Canada and was prompted by the cast to take one of the props and ship it to his house in Italy. This just happened to be a full size Gondola!
The attached pictures show my husband and our wonderful builder's merchant preparing the crate for its final journey up yet anothe rmountain to its resting place.
Life is never dull or perhaps I should say a Life less ordinary!

Antognolla golf course is an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones Jnr championship golf course, situated in the heart of Umbria. The course will be open to local residents and their guests and will have a driving range, a small club house, a bar and changing facilities. Pets in Itlay

Animals here are not treated in quite the same way as we Brits are used to at home. Dogs are used mainly for hunting wild boar and truffles, and are quite often kept chained or in kennels. Cats roam wild and are often killed on the road. We have two dogs and two cats. One of each we brought with us, both of which were animals we took from a rescue shelter. We have inherited an Italian dog called Cindy who was born in the garage of our motor mechanic, one of five and they were desperate to find homes for them. She was in a pretty poor state when we took her at barely 10weeks old although they had done their best. Our Italian cat I picked up on the highway one night driving home. It had been knocked over and I thought would not survive the night but 1year later is thriving. Butch, our own dog is the perennial wanderer and gets into all sorts of scrapes. The latest was just befor Christmas when, in temperatures -5% and snow he went missing for three days in the forest. We were very sad and thought he was gone for good. One night at about 9.30pm we received a phone call from an English gentleman asking if we had a tan labrador as he had one at his house with his lady dog (in season). He had read our phone number on his tag. Butch had travelled 15kilometres way into the wilds. We drove to collect him and he was delighted to see us! Life is never dull but there are always people who care.

Relocating to Italy, your local village.

We live in the hills about 5minutes from Trestina and so this has become our local village.
It may not be the type of village which British and Americans think of when they dream of Italy, it is not pretty, does not have cobbled streets and quaint alleyways and in fact is quite large.
HOWEVER, if you are considering relocating to Italy permanently, one really important factor to consider is how far is your nearest shop, doctor, hospital etc.
We moved to Umbria three years ago and had not explored our surroundings before we bought our house. Fate must have been on our side.
Trestina, our local village has everything which is essential for daily living from butchers, supermarkets, bread shops to hairdressers, doctors and vets.
My 84year old mother has been treated by our local village doctor and local health centre based in Trestina for a number of illnesses and when she recently suffered two very bad falls, they were absolutely magnificent. The care she received (at no cost) was far above anything I have ever seen in the UK.
Our dogs and cats are treated by the local vet. One night one of the dogs was attacked by a wild boar ( we are really in the country!) and at 1.00am I called Paolo who met us at the surgery and stitched him up.
The friendliness of everyone in the shops, bars ans restaurants is immeasurable. We have been welcomed and feel part of our local community in every way.
The village has lots of events such as pantomime, theatre shows, football matches and its own Spring and Summer festas as well as a weekly market.
We are extremely happy with life here and much is due to integrating with some great locals.

Jazz and Blues in Umbria

For lovers of Blues music then Trasimeno Blues Festival is a must see.The last week of July, you can enjoy yourself with quality blues music in Passignano, also in other towns such as Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago, Piegaro and Città della Pieve. Many of the prestigious names of the Blues world perform.

We have two houses close to Lake Trasimeno which would be perfect as a place to stay while enjoying these great festivals.

Well, after a very mild winter, we already have May trees in flower and temperatures are warming up nicely. Even the butterflies have come out of hiding. Before we know it the sunflowers will be blooming again!

A little piece of heaven in Umbria

Villa Sabbioni is a wonderful rustic retreat deep in the Umbrian countryside.
The two apartments are furnished with antique furniture and colourful linens and the views are to die for. I took a trip there two weeks ago as the owner had asked if I could advertise his house on our site. As well as producing their own olive oil on site they also have their own bees for breakfast honey! Take a look at some pictures of this little gem on our website.
This is the season of mellow fruitfulness and the Sagra della Castagna, and fruits of the forest festivals abound. The colours of the tress and hedgerows are just magnificent. This is a wonderful time of the year to be in Italy.

Umbrian Train to Perugia

Two weeks ago we decided to take the train from our local station Trestina to Perugia to sample the delights of local transport.
We were not disappointed! Apart from the cost - Euro30 return for five of us, the little train was a delight. Although from the outside it looks a little battle weary, full of colouful grafitti and only two coaches, it was clean, comfortable and most of all great fun. As we passed through Niccone, Umbertide, Pierantonio etc. it let out a little Thomas the Tank Engine whoop which delighted my three year old grand daughter no end, not to mention my husband! As we began our ascent to Perugia Santa Ana station, the steep climb seemed that it would be too much for the little engine but it masterfully achieved its aim. Umbria Jazz and train rides

We took the little train which goes from Sansepolcro to Perugia on Saturday to see what was happening at the Jazz Festival. It was fantastic. In the park not far from Santa Ana station a wonderful group were playing, there was a huge marquee where you could purchase all manner of wonderful food and drink and the atmosphere was amazing. This festival gets better every year. The station we used was Trestina which is our local village station and for the princely sum of EUR5.50 return we had a wonderful stress free day out. Buying in Italy - the right experience!

We drove over the brow of the hill. "I need a comfort break" Pete said. He stopped the car and disappeared. While I was looking into the distance, I saw it. "There it is!" I shouted. By the time he came back to the car I was in floods of tears. Our little house in the hills of Petrelle in Umbria was in the distance. I held the key in my hand, hardly daring to believe it was mine. We drove up the Strada bianca, and realised it really was ours. There began an adventure of a lifetime. All of the process from start to finish and far beyond was made possible by IPN and their wonderful team. Buying a property abroad is a nerve wracking process but they made it so easy and fun. To this day, (two years later) if there is anything we need, we just call Carla, Monica or any one in the team for advice. We have become quite self sufficient now but it is good to have "Old friends" in a crisis! If you are looking for a place in Italy, we would thoroughly recoomend IPN Castello.

Italy, Lake Trasimeno, Walks and Wine tasting

So apart from the many historical sights, and the wonderful views, what did Hannibal and his elephants do before fighting with the Romans on the shores of the Lake?
Well, he may have taken some wonderful walks. Here are a few samplers:
1 Città della Pieve - Pobeto10 km long. Recommended for seasoned walkers.
2 Castel Rigone - Torre Fiume14 km long. There is some ascent, and the walk is recommended for seasoned walkers.
3 Ferretto - Petrignano del Lago12.5 km long. Not much ascent, the walk is recommended to anyone who wants to do it, seasoned or not.
4 La Goga di Magione - Caligiana12 km long. Not much ascent, recommended for everyone.
5 Magione - Monte Ruffiano11 km long. Although not difficult, a minimum of training is recommended.
6 Missiano - Petrarvella - Panicale12 km long. The trail is of medium difficulty and recommended to seasoned walkers.
7 Torale - Vernazzano Cima di Tuoro - Pischiello12.2 km long. Medium difficulty levels. Recomended to seasoned walkers/hikers.
8 Mongiovino - Buca del Calcinaro11 km long. The trail is difficult in some parts and is recommended to the seasoned trekker.
9 La Marzolana - Montali - Sant’Arcangelo10.5 km long. Not difficult, but anyway recommended to seasoned walkers.
10 Passignano - Poggio del Belveduto13 km long. Not difficult, but its length recommends a nice picnic lunch or stops at the various rest places.

Questions about life in Italy!

I never anticipated that I would become somewhat of an expert on such things as how do you bring your pets to Italy, what about residency, can you teach English if you don't speak Italian! I guess I'm living proof that in the words of the ancient Chinese proverb; "May you live in interesting times!" is not always a curse.
Having arrived in Umbria with our worldly belongings and dogs and cat after a stressful three day drive in convoy through France and down into Italy from the Channel Islands, we have survived numerous adventures good and bad and STILL love it here. This evening we sat out in our back garden with the animals until 8.30pm sipping wine and mulling over the day.
I have been a TEFL teacher since October 2004 in Arezzo, which is a far cry from previous work experiences but has enriched my life beyond all I had hoped. Having taught children from eight years to adults classes, and everything in between, I have made many good Italian friends and discovered much about the people. We also now run our own property management business and I also do other work like stock market commentary in English and helping people with website marketing. And I'm told that you can't teach an old dog new tricks! All I reply is that life is not a dress rehearsal so go for it!

Spring in Italy

Well perhaps not quite, but not too far away! On Thursday I was travelling by car up the mountain towards Cortona to meet a client at Camucia station. I was hit by a blizzard and had to turn back and go down to Arezzo and back to Camucia to reach her. However, today the sun is shining and many of our trees are about to burst into bloom. This is what we cam to Italy for! April and May are to my mind the best months of all here in Umbria. The countryside is truly beautiful. Some of our properties have wonderful gardens and views. The real Italy, 12th Century Borgo

The 12th century 'borgo' (hamlet) of Santa Giuliana is one of the best-preserved castles in the Umbrian province of Perugia. In antiquity --- the earliest mention of Santa Giuliana is found in the monastic annals of the Carmodolite Order in the year 1143---the castle was a military outpost for Perugia. By the late 16th cent., the castle no longer had a military function and it became a monastic settlement. More recently, and until the end of the last century, it was occupied by farmers employed by one of the large landholders of this region.
In the early 1970's, a diverse group of artists, after lengthy negotiations with the Church, purchased the hamlet. Over the course of the next 10 years, the stone buildings were painstakingly restored. Although modern amenities (electricity, plumbing, central heating) were added, this was done with the utmost care to respect the original design.
Santa Giuliana is perched near the peak of Monte Corona and there are breathtakingly beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
